She’s Got Legs…

Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year. It’s the one time of year where “creepy” becomes cool.  I got a late start with decorating and because of this, I mainly focused on using items I already owned. I knew I was hosting a small dinner party and I wanted to deck out the table and place settings, but I really wanted to stick to my “spend nothing to very little” budget. I hit up the Dollar Tree and spent a whopping $6.00 plus tax. I then went to World Market and spent just under $20, but that was on party favors, not decor… although I did incorporate the favors into my place settings.

My table ended up sporting 100 legs. 8 spiders (64 legs)… 2 crows (4 legs)… 4 skeletons (8 legs)… 4 chairs (16 legs)… 1 bench (4 legs) and the 4 table legs themselves… so yes, “She’s Got Legs!”

This was my table decor trial run – the upcoming small dinner party will happen later this month.  I wanted the trial run so I didn’t have to worry about it the night of the get together and I wanted to photograph things in the early evening light. This will also enable me to enjoy dinner without going into full “blogger” mode. I will be more focused on the food and I will not be annoyed with the non picture perfect candle light ambiance. 🙂

I now see that it doesn’t even matter if I don’t get around to pulling weeds before the dinner… it sort of works with my creepy Halloween table theme. BTW, it should be noted that spiders scare me in all forms – real and fake. I decided to go with my fear, sort of like I did when I decided to become a snake owner (with my late husband) many  years ago. Face the fear… never really got comfortable with snake ownership, but I did appreciate the beauty of the Brazilian Rainbow Boas that I once owned. Now it’s all about dogs, much fluffier and more huggable.

I used basic white plates that I already owned. I gathered rocks from my entryway display, a mixed bag of green and brown Spanish moss from one of my craft drawers, some black raffia from my wrapping bins, chalkboard name tags from my parent’s birthday party, my grandmother’s silverware, basic textured tobacco colored napkins and a candelabra I had purchased probably 10 years ago… it was in the bathroom cabinet, because who doesn’t store candelabras near their toilet paper?

I had so much fun gathering things from my house and combining them with some of the new Dollar Tree purchases. That store is fun to hunt for cheap holiday items, I usually find a few things each season.

foodiddy-pumpkin-spider

The bell glitter spiders were a purchase last year from HomeGoods. I purposely didn’t go there to look at Halloween stuff this year, I’m also going to try and avoid picking up more Christmas decor. I already have way too much. The black and white checkered bowls that housed the white mini pumpkins are my favorite soup bowls purchased a few years back for .99 on clearance at TJMaxx – wish I had more than two. The pumpkins were purchased from my local grocery store a week ago and were 2 for a $1.

I had picked up the crows last year and they really fit my color scheme for the table.

The skeletons hung by their jute cords from the chandelier with some added Spanish moss.

So let’s go behind the scenes…

IMG_3043

I got the Oujia Board Mystifying Mints from World Market. I bought enough for each guest/place setting. I looked at all kinds of candy, but I just loved these and I knew that one of our guests doesn’t like chocolate, so this was a safe bet. The mints were $2.99 each. Not too bad for a party favor and a reminder of some of my childhood slumber parties.

IMG_3048

The spiders and creepy black cloth (more like netting) came from Dollar Tree. I used the cloth down the center of the table for some added texture.

IMG_3071

The skeleton garland that I hung from the chandelier was also a Dollar Tree find.  I had some gravestones in my hand, but I decided against them… glad I put those back.

IMG_3051

I cut the table runner from a roll I already had. Dan got me the black roll for my birthday. I’ve mentioned my love of craft paper – table runners and placemats on this blog before… These were a little pricey, even on sale. They are Cake brand and on sale were $26.95.

IMG_3063

I’ve used the paper for many dinner parties which eliminates the need for placemats or a tablecloth. Love that! I did realize that I could get the same effect by using wrapping paper.

IMG_3053

At $2.99 a roll, it’s much more affordable when trying not to go overboard with your budget. I’ve taken to breaking out the craft paper for birthdays and just about every occasion. I’ve not ventured into bright colors or metallics, I just like the natural look of recycled paper… plus, it works well with my black dining table.

I realize that I have more “basics” than most because I like to entertain, decorate and photograph props with my food… but I wanted to show you that you can certainly incorporate Dollar Tree finds into a tablescape that ends up looking pretty cool.

Do you have any Halloween party plans? My plan is to stay home and pass out candy to the cute kiddos in the neighborhood – this will only be accomplished if Dan hangs on to Finn’s leash for dear life or he and Finn stay in another room. Ding dong… bark, bark, bark… ding dong… bark, bark, bark… last year I could barely even deal.

My first 49ers game with a side of truffles

gameday

I got a text message from my dear friend Britt last week asking if we wanted to meet up at Candlestick Park for the Sunday, Oct. 6 – San Francisco 49ers vs. Houston Texans game. Seeing as I’ve never been to an NFL game, I jumped at the chance to experience my first one with her – an amazing friend and a true fan of the game and the 49ers. My family went to some college games growing up – Cal vs. Standford, so I knew it was going to be loud and a lot of fun.

IMG_3034

The drive into S.F. gave us a chance to see the new Bay Bridge – being stuck in traffic pretty much allowed us the time to inspect every last bolt. 🙂 – I have never seen so many car “fan” flags… lots of 49ers swag cruisin’ down the interstate.

IMG_3036

Our meet up time was 2:00 p.m. so we could get some tailgating time in before the 5:30 p.m. game. Because of traffic, we didn’t get to the stadium until just after 3:00 p.m., which resulted in having to park in a remote dirt lot several blocks from the official paved stadium parking. It still cost $30 and it filled up really fast with BBQ’s, beers and brats. Britt and her Mom were parked in a lot within the stadium, so we used the “Find my Friends” app to make it easier to find each other.

I forgot to take photos of our spread. I was so excited to see Britt and her Mom, I just stuffed my face and chatted the entire time. We packed everything back into the car before realizing I forgot to take a single photo of the food, whoops. This is a food blog right? Perhaps I should just embrace the fact that it’s turned into a “life” blog as well.

The food recap sans photos – We had corn tortilla chips with a traditional red salsa and deep fried flour tortilla chips with a cabbage salsa from one of my favorite local family owned Mexican restaurants. I also made pumpkin spice cookies with creamed cheese frosting that morning. Britt and her Mom hit up Whole Foods for some wine, delicious cheese samplings, hummus, crackers, veggies and golden raspberries. Not your typical spread, but definitely “our style” – no worries, Dan got a stadium dog once we got to our seats. He didn’t die from eating our “chick” food.

IMG_5313

We began our walk into the stadium and made our way through the serious tailgaters. So much alcohol, so many bottles held by drunk people, tons of BBQ smoke and a huge police presence everywhere…

IMG_5317

After a side trip to say “Hi” to one of Britt’s relatives, we stopped for some photos. I had to document my first 49ers game at Candlestick Park – knowing now how much fun they are, I’m sure we will catch some games once they move to Santa Clara and the new Levi’s stadium.

IMG_5323

IMG_5319

We made our way to the packed escalator and braved the narrow walkway to our seats. We were packed in like sardines and it was so much fun to be in the middle of it all, especially when 49ers fans chanted things to the Texans… We had a big group of Houston fans behind us and that sure added to some major razzing throughout the game.

IMG_5326

Our seats were awesome! Thanks Britt.

IMG_5330

IMG_5328

We were given pink 49ers towels when we entered the park in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The cheerleaders were in pink gear with giant pink flags, the players wore pink shoe sleeves and there was a huge sea of pink jackets for stadium employees.

IMG_5332

Britt and her Mom brought Godiva Truffle Flights into the stadium for dessert. Now this is definitely girlie football.

IMG_5336

The Cake Truffle Flight included:

  • Birthday Cake – Vanilla cake mousse with sprinkles
  • Pineapple Hummingbird – Cheesecake ganache atop pineapple and banana
  • Cheesecake – Cheesecake ganache inspired by Pennsylvania-Dutch cheesecake
  • Red Velvet Cake – Deep cocoa flavor inside decadent red velvet ganache
  • Chocolate Lava Cake – 72% cocoa dark chocolate ganache with a dark chocolate liquid fondant
  • Lemon Chiffon Cake – Tangy lemon chiffon filling

I had to pick the Birthday Cake – pink and sprinkles… don’t mind if I do…

IMG_5338

This photo (even though it’s blurry) cracks me up. It also sums up how awesome my truffle was. It was the perfect ending to a fabulous game. The 49ers won – 34-3, woohoo!

We hoofed it back to our car and spent the next 4.5 hours (it’s normally a 2-hour trip) in traffic due to closed lanes on the bridge due to a grass fire on Yerba Buena Island – which then triggered a bus vs. car accident. We didn’t get to bed until just before 1:00 a.m. and man did I feel it at work the next day. None of that really mattered… because I had a blast and what a fun way to spend a Sunday!

Old cookbooks and why I think they are cool…

IMG_2587

Some family members were in the middle of packing up their house to move and I got a phone call… Kath honey… would you have any interest in some old cookbooks we have laying around? UM YES! I didn’t even need to ask what the titles were… because what I’ve learned through antique and collectible hunting over the years is that you can find a true gem of a recipe, or inspiration to create your own, in just about any cookbook you thumb through.

IMG_2585

The artwork and styling alone are enough to keep my interest long enough to enjoy turning page after page. Does that not look like a can of albacore dumped on a plate? I’m sure it took hours and hours to style the plate… but wow, the appetizing factor for me in 2013 is pretty low… although, it most likely would have rocked back in 1978 when the cookbook was published.

Best Recipes From a Town With Two Names – The quaint little town of the Mendocino Coast in California, now known as Elk, was once a thriving lumber town with the name of “Greenwood”. Among the first settlers to the town were the Greenwood brothers, who lent their name to the lumber town while using their skills as hunters and trappers to supply the lumber camps with fresh meat. One of the brothers, Britton, became a successful rancher in the area.

When the town applied for a postal designation in 1887, it was found that a town in Eldorado already bore the name of “Greenwood” after one of the other brothers had settled there. As it was already recognized by the post office, the name couldn’t be used again in California. Another name had to be selected… As Elk Creek ran nearby, and many elk roamed the area, the name “Elk” was chosen.

The town of Elk – still referred to as ‘Greenwood” by many locals – now is home to bed and breakfast inns, small cafes and a wonderful state museum. The cookbook compiled by the Greenwood Civic Club came about as a fundraiser to help keep activities for the community going strong. All recipes were submitted by locals and their names appear next to them.

The cookbook also contains several black and white photos from the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. One of my favorites is a photo of Mrs. Ballantine’s Candy Store taken in 1898,  and a menu reproduction from 1871-1884 – where you could get a Porterhouse steak for 20 cents and eggs and oysters could be ordered for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

IMG_2584

I love that the cookbook contains an “Oops” page – makes it that much more charming. Most mistakes are in measurements or missing ingredients – pretty sure that happens in lots of cookbooks, heck… I’ve even left off an ingredient by accident on this blog.

The Pennsylvania Dutch Cook Book is filled with lots of lard and butter laden recipes. I’m thinking that the Pennsylvania Dutch eat pies for breakfast, lunch, dinner and in between snacks – my kind of people. The book is filled with line art and sayings… De mad mit dika boka hen hartsa we do woka  – “Girls with fat cheeks have hearts like flint.” – Hund as gautze beisse net.  – “A barking dog seldom bites.” Wammer flucht iberm fische fangt mer nix – “If you swear while fishing, you will not catch any fish.”

Lots of laughs were had as I read through the sayings…

I pulled another cookbook from the stack and found a recipe for a “Jewish Sour Cream Coffee Cake” and I know I will be trying that.

IMG_2582

I love my new/old cookbooks and look forward to trying some of the random recipes soon. A special thanks to my Aunt and Uncle for the gift of history and continued culinary inspiration.
