A Whole New Way of Seeing Apple Hill

I’ve only been to Apple Hill once and I blogged about it on October 17, 2010. Apparently I got really creative back then with the post title – “Apple Hill” – My first time to Apple Hill included visiting High Hill Ranch, Apple Ridge Farms and Boa Vista Orchards, which were all great.

Our friend Aaron lived in Camino for most of his childhood and over the years has talked about his favorite places within Apple Hill. We decided to take him up on his recent offer to visit some of those places and to have lunch with his parents who still live there. A tour of Apple Hill from a local… why yes, don’t mind if I do. I should clarify and say two locals, because Carolyn (Aaron’s other half) visited Apple Hill often and has family and friends that live in the area and work at some of the orchards. So two local tour guides… how cool is that?

Before we got to the Apple Hill goodness… we detoured to Placerville for their annual antique street faire. I was jumping up and down at the prospect of finding cool stuff – my recent injury prevented me from going to our usual Sacramento shows the past few months.

IMG_2595

We started at centro so Carolyn could get some coffee…

IMG_2591

We then made our way to the first set of booths. I immediately found myself digging through a gigantic basket of vintage blocks… I scored the letter “K” (in orange) to add to my entry way shelves. $1.00 and I was off to the next set of booths.

IMG_2594

$175 for a Commercial Vita-Mixer Maxi 4000 w/plunger… always fascinated by vintage kitchen stuff and realized the design hasn’t changed all that much over the years. More plastic now, but still tall and slender. I prefer my stubby Blendtec. :).

IMG_2592

Carolyn and I also continued with our tradition of finding and photographing the most bizarre item/display… I think placing jewelry on a stuffed lower body/butt… pretty much takes the prize.

IMG_2599

Carolyn had been chatting up this new Re-Defined Furnishings store for a few months and kept saying that it was my kind of store…

IMG_2596

She was right! The place was filled with old doors, windows, boxes, salvaged items, really cool re-purposed furniture (Think bowling lane tables) – I was drooling the entire time.

IMG_2598

Love… Love…Love… I didn’t splurge at the store, but I did get some old, rusty springs to display pumpkins on for Fall decor. I also found some majorly discounted cocktail napkins ($1.00), place cards (.25 cents) and salad servers ($3.00) at the hardware store sale. All in all, a very successful side trip.

Now back to Apple Hill…

IMG_2615

Our first stop was Rainbow Orchards for apple cider donuts…

IMG_2614

IMG_2601

I enjoyed looking at all the artwork.

IMG_2603

IMG_2605

The colors and shapes of the heirloom varieties got me super excited to deck my house out for Halloween and Thanksgiving.

IMG_2602

Aaron ordered the donuts and I got a hand-dipped corn dog for me and apple crisp for Dan. A pre-lunch to our lunch. Yep… a corn dog for breakfast, that’s how I roll.

IMG_2609

IMG_2612

These were the best apple cider donuts I had ever tasted… they were piping hot and practically melted in your mouth. +1 for Aaron on best apple cider donuts.

IMG_2607

You could order the apple crisp with ice cream, but Dan opted without… I stole a bite and it was pretty incredible… warm, gooey and man did I wish he had opted for pie a la mode.

IMG_2613

We ventured around back to see the craft vendors and happened upon this disturbing display. What happened to old fashioned scarecrows? A plastic fireman’s hat and stuffed body tied to a cross with a scarf? Really? No thanks… I’ll take “What is straw stuffed overalls, a plaid shirt, straw hat, button eyes and stitched smile for $100 Alex… then again, maybe I’m just not a fan of the scarecrow in general. Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz – now he was super creepy.  Mr. rope around his neck/burlap bag face. Whoa… enough of that.

Onto happier things. After our first stop, we headed to Aaron’s childhood home for a wonderful grilled burger lunch. No crowds, a fun garden tour, great company and a beautiful view from the deck… good times indeed. Thanks to Aaron’s parents for the delicious food and visit.

 IMG_2627

Next on our agenda was a stop at Bodhaine Orchards for pie. According to Aaron and Carolyn – the best pie in all of Apple Hill can be enjoyed there.

IMG_2616

 IMG_2626

The bright, red doors were very inviting.

IMG_2618

Aaron and Carolyn got the blackberry-apple sour cream pie to go and a caramel apple bar to sample while there.

IMG_2621

I was offered a taste of the caramel apple bar and it was delicious.

IMG_2625

Dan and I purchased a French apple pie to take home. I noticed right away that the topping was less “crumbly” than we’ve had in the past… once home, I determined that heating it up was a necessity because the “pie dust/powder” seriously chokes you if you breathe in while chewing/inhaling the pie. Not quite sure why they don’t adopt my – “Our pies will kill you!” slogan… but I felt when eaten cold, it was indeed a choking hazard. Now once heated, my story and love for the pie changes… the pie dust/powder softens, caramelizes and coats the apples to perfection. I still prefer more of an oatmeal crumb topping, but this was a fun change.

IMG_2628

Our last stop of the afternoon was Abel’s Apple Acres. We had to park pretty far away on what I thought was cow patties… I was later informed by farm girl Carolyn that it was horse poop… awesome. What can I say? City girl doesn’t know her poops. Poop and food talk in the same post, what more could you want?

IMG_2630

How about Annie and Andy –  flattened-wood, fur-coated, apron wearing bears?

IMG_2631

Or fur bear butts as you leave… a photo request from Carolyn.

IMG_2633

The reason for visiting Abel’s was for the cider sauce. You can put it over ice cream, pie or just about anything. I also picked up some fudge and a loaf of apple pumpkin bread.

We had a great day and I’ll be enjoying our haul for the rest of the week.  If you have been to Apple Hill, do you have any favorite spots I should visit? I think the Jack Russell Farm Brewery is next on my list – it was way too crowded the day we went.

Dono dal Cielo Vineyard

We recently had the wonderful opportunity to take part in a special event with family and friends at the Dono dal Cielo Vineyard in Newcastle, CA.

IMG_2347

We arrived and immediately made our way to the patio area outside the warehouse style barrel room. We were instantly greeted as if we were family and my favorite part of the meet and greet was with Pearl, the winery’s “farm” dog.

IMG_2354

She was very friendly and mingled with all the party guests. The kids at the gathering instantly fell in love. Pearl definitely got her fill of hugs and kisses that evening.

IMG_2361

IMG_2350

Even though the warehouse is huge – you enter through a regular size door… I didn’t expect to see what was on the other side.

IMG_2357

A wonderful bar and tasting area with an area filled with boutique style gifts.

IMG_2358

The wine barrel tables were my favorite part of the decor.  I loved the glass tops where you could see through to the different corks.

IMG_2362

Firevine Wood Fired Pizza was hired to cater the event.. A mobile authentic Italian wood-fired oven on a custom-built trailer – Yes please, sign me up to own one of those!

IMG_2362b

IMG_2355

All prep was done right off the trailer. We were able to watch him work the dough, build the pizzas and place them right into the oven.

IMG_2364

The amazing smells permeated the entire patio area. While others rushed to try the wonderful wines, I grabbed myself a beer (Wine has been triggering migraines for me lately) and there is just nothing better than pizza and a nice, cold beer.

IMG_2371

IMG_2370

My first two slices were the “Marg” – Tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella and basil.  I’m a HUGE fan of most wood fired margherita pizza and this one didn’t disappoint. Other choices were “Pep” – Tomato sauce, pepperoni, garlic and fresh basil – it too was cooked to perfection. The fresh garlic really changed things up. The third pizza was their “Zola” – Tomato sauce, gorgonzola, spicy Italian sausage and sopressata salami. I tried that one too… Yes, I had 5 pieces of pizza that night and while I was rather impressed by that number, a few of the guys had between 8-10 pieces… all you can eat pizza is about as good as it gets. I did have some of the mixed green salad – but I would say it was definitely on the side.

IMG_2360

Bottles of wine flowed and I had a wonderful time hanging out on the patio chatting. The view to my right wasn’t bad either. As the sun went down, we further explored the grounds.

IMG_2397

I spent the last hour taking lots of family and friend photos in the beautiful light. The farm kitty also made an appearance :).

IMG_2406

This vineyard is a true gem. There are picnic tables on the grounds and lots of areas to hangout. I see myself going back with a group of friends for a fall picnic.

While I may not be cooking much lately, I certainly have been enjoying lots of time with my family and have loved every minute of it.

Petaluma with friends…

And yes… it’s another non-cooking post. Still walking with a cane, still not all that interested in standing for hours in the kitchen, still missing it terribly. There has been some improvement on the injury front, but it’s a super slow process. I’ve been trying not to let it get to me, so I’ve filled my weekends with friendship and fun.

My latest adventure out was a day trip to Petaluma, CA –  followed by a get together with more friends in Napa, CA.

stanly4

Our first stop was Stanly Lane Marketplace, located just off Highway 12/121 at 3100 Golden Gate Drive in Napa, CA. Aaron and Carolyn have made this a regular stop on previous day trips. Coffee, donuts, local products, Napa style gifts and produce… sign me up!

stanly2

As soon as you walk in, you are greeted with tables full of local products. Olives, jams, artisan olive oils, spice rubs, BBQ sauces, wines, teas and a whole lot more. I had to refrain just a bit. My Mom would have been in rooster heaven – she’s had a collection for some time now.

stanly3

I loved the bar display and chandelier lighting off to the left of the entrance. Lots of flavored olive oil samples set out for tasting.

stanly1

The dish towels made me laugh…

stanly7

I decided on a crumb donut and then headed over to the D&S Produce Stand to explore fruits and veggies.

stanly8

stanly9

The shallots, tomatoes and avocados looked amazing. They made me crave fresh guacamole and thankfully that craving was later satisfied in Napa.

stanly5

The property was so cute. It would be cool to get picnic supplies in the store if you had kids or pets with you.

stanly6

Aaron and Carolyn ended up getting some gorgeous pluots, green onions, avocados and a flat of ripe peaches for delicious pie making.

tasteofpetaluma1

Our next stop was Petaluma. I had read on a couple of food blogs that Taste of Petaluma was going on, but we decided to brave the crowds anyway. Parking was a challenge, but Aaron was a champ and we scored a spot in the parking garage. Cane in hand… we started walking through downtown and were surrounded by dozens of one-of-a-kind boutiques, galleries and restaurants.

strorefront2

One of our first stops was Paperwhite – a card and stationary store. The shelves and tables were full of amazing letterpress cards, gorgeous wrap, spools of pretty ribbon and gift ideas. I snapped quick photos for my girlfriend Kindra… she owns an amazing party prop business with a friend (Pinwheels & Polka Dots) and they’ve decorated similar “back-to-school” store front windows and have recently been featured on Good Day Sacramento.

I just loved the use of maps, throw some of my vintage suitcases into the mix and I’d be good to go! It really made me wish I was hosting a travel themed party soon.

storefront1

Our next stop was the Petaluma Pie Company, a farm-to-table bakery cafe specializing in sweet and savory pies made with local and organic ingredients. I had heard so much about the place, I couldn’t wait to try a pie.

petalumapie8

petalumapie5

petalumapie9

The line for Taste of Petaluma participants was long. I had to strategically wait to get a photo without anyone in it.

petalumapie10

I decided that my iPhone was it for the day. Juggling shopping, my purse, my cane and everything else made it impossible to crate around my bigger camera.

petalumapie11

This above photo was taken for Deede… she is the queen of pies and I could see her actually putting one of these pie tin snake sculptures in her house. 🙂

petalumapie3

The nectarine/blackberry pie oozed with bubbling fruit goodness and the pear, ginger and cardamom mini pie sounded interesting too. Heck, they all looked wonderful. Aaron and Carolyn had sampled different items on previous visits, so I ended up going with a savory pre-lunch appetizer pie based on their recommendation.

petalumapie6

Carolyn and I split a cheeseburger hand pie. Notice the pin – it’s the pie company’s slogan… and Carolyn snapped one up. I wanted a T-shirt, but got distracted.

petalumapie7

Seasoned grass-fed ground beef with melted Spring Hill Dairy’s aged organic cheddar = PURE DELIGHT! Wish I would have gotten a few of the fruit pies to go – Dan does too!

copper1

Our next stop was Copperfield’s Books. Two end caps, a giant table and this entire wall of cookbooks. Yes, please! This little side trip really made me miss cooking. I thumbed through some cookbooks I’ve been interested in and then I moved on to the magazine room.

copper2

Over 10 wall to wall display shelves of magazines… I get most of my subscriptions on the iPad now, but I do love to thumb through actual pages.

copper3

I did find one of my favorite magazines “Flea Market Style” and I took it as the perfect opportunity to rest and read while Aaron and Carolyn filled their baskets with books. I also purchased some cards. No books this trip.

We ventured into some antique stores and other vintage find shops and the prices were well beyond my comfort zone. Fun to browse though.

avatars9

Lunch was next on our agenda. We had passed by Avatar’s Punjabi Burrito on our way out of the parking garage and decided we’d give it a try. They also have locations in Sausalito, Mill Valley, Larkspur and Fairfax.

avatars5

The place was pretty dead since everyone was more interested in trading in their Taste of Petaluma tickets for samples elsewhere.

avatars1

“Purveyors of Ethnic Confusions” – Awesome… apparently a journalist used the phrase “Ethic Confusions” when describing Avatar’s food and it stuck.

avatars3

I knew I either wanted a burrito or a rice plate. I ended up going with a burrito on the recommendation of our server.

avatars6

I ordered their curried sweet potato with chicken burrito.

avatars7

avatars8

I apologize for the not so appetizing photos, oh well, photos aside…  I loved this burrito and at least I’m blogging. My burrito was filled with fresh curried sweet potato, chicken and garbanzo beans, basmati rice, herb salsa, a pineapple fruit chutney, pickled carrots, non-fat yogurt and tamarind sauce. The burrito was huge – I ate a little less than 1/2 and was full. If we didn’t have plans and if it wasn’t going to be “curry sitting in a hot car” all day – I would have gotten it “to go” – it was hard to say goodbye to what would have been incredible leftovers, but I’m sure Aaron appreciated my decision to not “curry up” his car.

avatars4

I also had the opportunity to try the lightly curried fresh button mushroom appetizer – thanks Aaron! As I was eating it, I pictured myself making a batch to serve over pasta. It paired well with the Indian bread, but I thought it might also work as an alternative to traditional pasta and marinara sauce.

The rest of the afternoon was spent hanging out with Dan and additional friends in Napa. Wine, margaritas, a nacho bar, grilled sausage, salads, birthday cupcakes (chocolate, cheesecake, red velvet and vanilla) and lots of laughter. It was a great weekend and for a minute there,  I actually felt pretty normal – injury and all.
