Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Co.

Two of my girlfriends and I decided to each make lists of restaurants we’ve been wanting to try and we’ve been meeting up every now and again to have dinner together. My turn was up and I chose Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Co. located at 1630 S. Street in Sacramento, CA.

Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Co.

I immediately fell in love with the industrial vibe. From the moment I stepped foot through the front door, I wanted to incorporate some of the ideas into my own home – this is always a good sign. In fact, I’ve already headed in this direction with my own style of decorating and this was a reminder of why I chose to go that route. Love, love, love.

Hook & Ladder front door

From the sign lettering on the outside of the building, to the front reservation desk’s wood burned shipping crates, to the bar stool and lighting choices… I loved everything, especially their use of reclaimed wood teamed with industrial metals.

Old typewriter, check! Vintage phone, check! Random tools… yep, have those too. I’m telling you… this was everything I have and hunt for vintage wise in one place. O.k., enough of me geeking out on the decor… onto the rest of the restaurant scene.

Straight from their website “We aim to rejuvenate the historic space at 17th & S streets by celebrating this time of industry and growth. Our goal is to build upon our city commerce and contribute to Sacramento’s future. We embrace local farms, ranches, breweries and wineries in both our kitchen and our bar. We’ve also brought in the finest chefs, bartenders and serving staff to provide an exceptional customer experience that demonstrates our hometown pride.”

I had already checked out the website to scope out possible menu wants and desires… I stumbled upon one dish that caught my eye and I knew that was what I was going to order. House-made Roasted Beet Linguine with asparagus, cauliflower, baby spinach, garlic cream sauce and goat cheese.

Hook & Ladder menu

The menu was housed on a wooden clipboard… another detail that sort of melted my vintage heart. While my particular page had seen better days – and others at my table could have used darker ink – I still really liked the simplicity and overall feel, including the typewriter font. Very important things for a designer. 🙂

Hook & Ladder meals

I started off splitting the Pancetta & Poached Egg Salad with one of my girlfriends – besides the pancetta and egg, the salad also had frisse, raddiccio & almonds and was dressed in a mustard vinaigrette. Not my usual type of salad – a bit out of my comfort zone of mixed greens, but well worth the adventure. Next up… top right – that was my House-made Roasted Beet Linguine. Hands down the best dish of the evening – we all shared bites of our dishes. As most of you know that have been reading for a while, I am a huge mac-n-cheese fan and the beet linguine dish mirrored that for me. The vegetables added a punch of flavor and texture to each bite. I kind of can’t stop thinking about it and that’s pretty rare for me to find something like that dining out.

The bottom left dish is the House-made Basil Cavatelli with Brussels sprouts, pancetta, caramelized shallot, and clamshell mushrooms. The combination was good, I just found it to be on the salty side. Not so much that I didn’t enjoy it, just not as good as my beloved linguine. The last dish on the bottom right was the Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin and gnocchi with smoked tomato & braised mustard greens. I’m not a huge pork fan, but this tenderloin was fabulous and I could have easily eaten more of the gnocchi.

We were all thrilled with our dishes and our dining experience as a whole. We went in without reservations because it was mid-week and we knew we were going to be meeting before the dinner rush. Our plan was perfect… we got a table upon arrival and within an hour the place was hopping. I only had my iPhone, but wanted to mention that my girlfriends used their iPhones to light up our meals – best friends ever! The restaurant is dimly lit, which I feel adds to the whole relaxed vibe of the place. I’m looking forward to my next visit and possibly sitting outside on the patio and enjoying one of their fun house cocktails.

I’m excited to add a new restaurant into the rotation – only bummed I waited so long to give it a try.

Love is in the air… and yes, I’m still around.

With it being Valentine’s Day today… thought it would be appropriate to post on my blog since my last one was for Christmas, ha-ha! I hate that it’s been this long between posts, but I’m ghost writing for other blogs (all different topics) and I’ve burned myself out. Being on the computer has been something I’ve been avoiding  when I do get some free time. Cooking has also been really boring and repetitive. I’ve been relying on Sunday food prep and eating the same thing until it runs out. Not very creative or blog-worthy.

foo-vday

I took a bunch of photos off my phone out of necessity. My phone stopped allowing me the ability to take photos because I ran out of memory space. So I decided to do a few little photo collages of things I never blogged about. I have to start somewhere when it’s been almost 2 months since I last posted.

First up… Happy Valentine’s Day. I honestly didn’t get very creative with decor… it just sort of snuck up on me after Christmas. I threw some hearts around and called it good. I did set the table for tonight’s dinner. Just a casual taco bowl night at home with my hubs.

foo-paint

Next up… a painting party. Friends invited Dan and I to their house to celebrate a birthday and to just hangout after the holidays. We had a blast. It was just like the painting/wine shops popping up all over town. Bring a group of friends, enjoy some cocktails and paint your face off while an instructor gives you some guidance. Everyone paints along with the instructor and you are free to take your painting in whatever direction you feel like. Dan, Carolyn and I decided to stick pretty close to the instructor… others chose different colors all together. The class lasted just over 2 hours and after several champagne and ciders (my opinion – way better than mimosas) – I was feeling very much like a professional artist, LOL. It did remind me of the hours and hours I spent painting in college and the all-nighter I once pulled creating 30 watercolors in a single night. I was not a fan of my watercolor class… but still managed to get an A-.

photo-11

We were also invited to a soft opening of Oz Korean BBQ’s newest location in the area. Friends of friends got the invite due to their status on Yelp and we tagged along. We all had been to the other Sacramento location and this was a similar experience, only with more of a club like atmosphere and way better down-vented grills on each table.

photo-12

We all ordered the $19.99 “All You Can Grill & Eat”  – the deal comes with unlimited choices of BBQ items, side dishes, wasabi salad and steamed white rice! I liked the sweet pork shoulder and sesame beef the best. We ordered a side of Shangchu lettuce to make wraps. We also ordered fried pot stickers, Young’s hot wings and fries from the appetizer list. I am NOT a fan of hot wings and these were incredible. I also may or may not have eaten 4 bowls of the wasabi salad. Our servers brought their “Ice Pearl” dessert  to the table for us to share. Shaved Ice, sweet red beans, condensed milk, seasonal fruits, and mochi. It was delicious!

In other news… I’ve been trying some new restaurants in midtown and downtown Sacramento. I opted to not take photos… but plan on going back for round 2 meals for some blogging fun!

I’ve definitely been keeping busy. I’m still on and off with dieting and workouts has been pretty sporadic… haven’t fully recovered from a horrible hamstring pull, so I’ve been babying that for months. I did just finish a 30-day water challenge… I upped my water intake to around 100 oz. a day. I was sticking pretty close to 64 and needed the additional motivation boost.

I have a few recipes flagged to make in the upcoming weeks. I’m hoping to carve out some “me” time to focus on the things I enjoy – this blog, cooking and taking photos do top my list. I feel like I have written this “Where has she been?” post several times over the past few years. I guess the good thing about having a blog… it’s always a safe place to land… and waiting patiently until you get back to it. Since I no longer share in an ad revenue partnership – there is way less pressure to blog and that is nice. I just miss my readers and sharing incredible experiences and delicious food.

Hope all is well with you guys… may your world be filled with lots of  tasty treats. Until next time…

My Home for Christmas…

It seems like I was just posting about Halloween and now it’s Christmas Eve. A late Thanksgiving really messed me up this year. I feel like it’s been a mad rush since then to check everything off my “to do” list. I have managed to find some balance… I did watch just about every Christmas movie on Hallmark, Lifetime and Ion… it’s a sickness that I never plan to cure. I absolutely love watching Christmas movies… it really doesn’t matter how cheesy… I’m glued to the T.V. from the beginning of November until now.

IMG_5979

I told myself that I needed to be conservative on new purchases for Christmas decor… it kind of worked, but let’s just say that Hobby Lobby, HomeGoods, T.J.Maxx and my favorite boutiques still got some of my money. This is the first year I borrowed a few items from friends, so that was fun.

IMG_5980

The suitcase and ice skates were new this year… I got them back in October at an outdoor vintage and collectible show that I took photos of and never posted about. Seems to be a running theme with me.

IMG_5981

I picked up the little toy truck for a few bucks at the Sacramento Antique show I always go to under the freeway… It has since moved to a new location, but I haven’t checked it out yet. I picked up two trucks, the other one was cream colored. I purchased some mini Christmas trees from the modeling section at Hobby Lobby and added them to the beds of the trucks.

IMG_3254

I borrowed this awesome Royal typewriter from my girlfriend Carolyn.  I knew I wanted to type a letter to Santa to put on display.

IMG_5984

The only problem was the typewriter doesn’t work too well, the red ink ribbon wanted to take over… so Adobe Illustrator, a typewriter font, some cool paper and I was good to go. I was happy with the results and it makes me smile every time I walk through my front door. Dan wanted to know how I selected the Cessna TTx and I told him that I did a little research and it looked like the most bad ass plane his pilot’s license would allow him to fly. He laughed… then asked if I had a spare million sitting around… duh, Santa has connections. You gotta believe!

IMG_5967

Something else I borrowed this year was the rusted toy truck. My friend Aaron collects toy trucks and I knew it would be perfect for some bottle brush trees. I added some red berries I already had and hung some silver mercury glass ornaments on jute with painter’s tape to the back of the mirror and I loved the look.

IMG_5974

I found a rust colored wire tree at HomeGoods and it balanced out the dresser.

IMG_5968

Our sweater monogrammed stockings were hung from the dresser handles with more jute twine.

IMG_5971

I added some fabric wrapped candy canes to our lamps…

IMG_5972

Ho Ho Ho ribbon I found at HomeGoods was also added to the lamp shades… I just tied a small knot in the back since it faced the wall… a super easy holiday twist.

IMG_3262

Another place I added ribbon was to an old wooden drawer I picked up several years ago at a garage sale. I used some small nails and tacked it straight onto the drawer… no glue so I can easily remove it. The felted dalmatian dog was purchased from a vendor at the Victorian Christmas in Nevada City – I fell in love the minute I saw it. The adorable dog reminded me of my childhood BFF’s dalmatian Sparky… great memories.

IMG_3263

I used natural ornaments and jute twine balls along with fresh greens from the bottom of my Christmas tree to complete my dining room table centerpiece.

IMG_3261

I added my candy cane sign to the top of my mailbox… then stuffed it with greens and more fabric covered candy canes. The rolled up newspaper is one my parents gave me from the 1960’s. The loop you see is from a set of old keys…

IMG_3265

I had purchased the bell trees from my local grocery store last year… but decided to add more bells and some recipe books that I inherited from family. My German Santa (he’s a candy holder) made his way into my decor this year. I incorporated pine cones into the mix as well.

IMG_3268

IMG_5992

I went with stars, bells and reindeer on top of our entertainment center. The black and tan train case was a purchase this year from one of my favorite antique shops.

IMG_3269

This snow globe is from Target’s Threshold line and it plays “Here Comes Santa Claus”  – I love it!

IMG_5884

I LOVE having a real Christmas tree again. Finn was less than a year old last year and I didn’t want to risk it. This year we decided to place the tree on top of my old round dining room table and it worked out great! No puppy exploration or broken ornaments… and our house smells wonderful from the fresh pine scent. I could not get a good photo of the tree because it’s in front of a wall of windows… the glare was horrible and I didn’t want to break out my big photo lights… so this is what you get. 🙂

IMG_5800

The tree is just shy of 6 feet… the star on top almost reaches the ceiling. I decided to break out all of the ornaments we’ve collected over the years. I took photos of some of my favorites.

IMG_3278

A marionette violinist frog… why not?

IMG_3272

How about a dancing frog with a top hate and cane? I swear, not into collecting  frogs… just loved these two ornaments.

IMG_3271

A fish with a Christmas tree hat… now that’s fabulous!

IMG_3275

A more traditional cross country skiing Santa…

IMG_5989

An alligator with bows…

IMG_3276

A peg-leg bulldog ornament… yes please!

IMG_3273

Super special to me are the Danbury Mint schanuzer ornaments my Dad has been buying me since Higgins came into my life. Now that Higgins is gone, I feel like it’s a sweet reminder of my sweet,  little,  grey angel dog… each year it’s a new design… this year was a grey schnauzer next to a snowman and the year before that was one driving an old car. These are very dear to me and I make sure they are reinforced and actually tied onto branches.

IMG_3284

My Aunt gave me some ornaments this year (Thank you so much!) that belonged to my Grandma and Grandpa. They are the most vibrant pinks, blues and silvers and I remember them hanging from their table top tree every year. I love that I have a special part of their Christmas tradition in my home. I miss all of my grandparents so much, especially this time of year. If you still have your grandparents, give them extra hugs… you are so lucky to still have them in your lives. I do adore watching my parents get to be grandparents to my niece, but man do I miss Christmas get-togethers at their houses.

IMG_3285

I did hang a few on my tree this year, but loved the way they looked in my trifle bowl on the dresser in my office.

IMG_3287

Speaking of my office… it turned into a wrapping center for the holidays. Besides being a little obsessed with Christmas decor… I might also have a slight obsession with beautiful wrapped packages. I put a lot of thought into wrapping each gift and I select papers that go together and purchase fabric ribbons with texture and unique gift tags. I’m sure it would be different if I was wrapping for kids… I’d go with shiny and bright kid friendly wrap and I did do that for my niece… but the rest get color coordinated boxes, tissue, ribbon and tags. It’s just what I do and I love that you can get deep discounted stuff at HomeGoods and T.J.Maxx to make it happen.

IMG_3296

Wooden Danny Seo tags and beautiful Domain wooden spools of ribbon made their way into my cart and heart this year.

IMG_3295

Love, Love, Love the vibrant reds and textured neutrals… I did splurge on these ribbon spools, the wooden box with 5 spools was $19.99. I did find some more manageable prices as well.

IMG_3293

A big roll of jute twine is only a couple of bucks at the hardware store… solid color fabric spools can be found for a couple of bucks each.

IMG_3290

I used recycled paper gift tags this year from World Market and HomeGoods. I have a ton of wrapping paper left over this year… I went a little crazy. $1.99-$3.99 a roll doesn’t seem like a lot, but it does add up.

The cookies have been baked, stocking stuffers have been selected, food has been purchased and prepped. I now look forward to spending some quality time with my family.  I’m sure it will be over before I know it and I just want to soak up as much as I can while it’s here.

What is something you love to do during the holidays? Besides my Christmas movie watching marathons, one of my favorite things to do is looking at Christmas light displays with my family and friends… I really admire the people that go all out.

Merry Christmas from my home to yours,
foo
