Halloween Snake Sandwiches

A few years ago Dan and I made snake sandwiches for a Halloween party. I decided to recreate them for today’s lunch.

Pillsbury Crusty French Loaf  and some Dole Pineapple Juice cans…

Note: you don’t need to use the cans, it just helps with the curves.  Do not bake the bread and cans together.

Break out the kitchen shears and make triangular cuts to form the snake scales…

Melt some butter in the microwave and then add a few drops of green food color and mix well.

Use a brush to paint the snake scales with the green food coloring mixture and then bake using the directions on the can of refrigerated bread dough.

Slice the bread with a serrated bread knife – I just turned it on it’s side and easily sliced right through. Our sandwich makings included deli oven roasted turkey, brown sugared ham, hard salami, Havarti cheese, American cheese, Sierra Nevada Porter Spicy Brown Mustard, Mayo, salt, pepper, vinegar and red leaf lettuce… I used some dill I already had for the photos only.

Spanish olives and toothpicks were used to form the eyes… and salami for the tongue…

Slither, slither… Hiss, hiss…

The photos don’t do Mr. Snake justice…

Dan and I split the snake…

He got 3 body parts and I got the head…

I had huge plans to bust out Halloween cookies and other treats today, time just got away from me. I spent the day trimming the bushes leading up to the porch, putting Halloween lights on the front porch topiary and prepping for trick-or-treaters.  We are giving out Reeses, 3Musketeers, Milk Duds, Kit Kat, Junior Mints, Mike and Ike’s, Skittles, Nerds, Dots, Snickers and Caramel Apple Pops.

So far we’ve had a bunch of really big groups – a 2 year old bumble bee is in the running for cutest costume.

I love decorating for Halloween – got a couple of new black feathered trees and some spell books at HomeGoods this year.

Didn’t carve pumpkins – stuck the Eddie Bauer ceramic on the porch with some cool LED lights. Kids keep talking about the witch. 😉

I hope you all enjoyed your Halloween as much as I did. No parties and no costumes for us this year. It was really nice to just have a mellow day – chit chatting it up with the neighbors and all of their kiddos.

Thanks Rebecca – I’m imagining a reptile kid’s birthday or something too. Now I just need to adopt a kid 😉

YOU would so ROCK as a mom, Kath…….this snake sandwich is awesome! My boys would love it.

Last night was fun…. My brother and I stayed in the heated van as we followed the boys slowly in it. It was a cold 40 degree night here in Michigan. Of course the boys ended up with too much candy and I’m sure it will go to waste. For now it will stay in a pretty bowl 🙂

Thanks Aim… so you were the creepy people following kids in the van huh? LOL…sounds like a fun night, glad your boys enjoyed themselves. I am sending all candy to work with Dan, enough is enough.

Kath, best looking bread snake I’ve ever seen! Love how you made the scales with the scissors, very cool! My kids would have gotten the biggest kick out of snake sandwiches :o) I’ll have to bookmark this for next year.

Love your decorations for all the holidays and have for a long time (ever since I first found your blog during WW days). I can’t wait to see what you have in store for Christmas :o)

Minus the olives, which I’m not a fan of, that thing is way too cool looking. And it’s a sammich! I like sammiches!

Super cool and yummy looking! This would be perfect for a kid’s birthday party. The kids would eat it up like crazy….the big kids (adults) too! 🙂

Wildly creative way to manipulate the dough into scales. And how can you go wrong with green butter and a salami tongue! This is so perfect.
