Hanukkah Dinner With Friends…

Last night we celebrated day four of Hanukkah with our friends. Deede had mentioned wanting to make a special dinner for Josh and I’m always up for entertaining and was honored to be part of their celebration. I provided the location and Deede took care of the food.

I wanted to create a special table setting for the dinner. As my table is centered around Christmas decor, I stripped it down and immediately started thinking of options using things I already owned. I found a template for dreidel place cards on Martha Stewart’s website. I busted out some card stock and got to tracing and cutting.

I created quite the mess, but they turned out pretty decent – and they were easy enough to create.

I used some satin and grosgrain blue ribbon to run down the center of the table. My wedding china was perfect for the occasion. I also broke out my crystal stemware, mini salt and pepper shakers, my grandmother’s monogrammed white napkins and silver napkin rings. The table turned out really nice.

Party of 5 (loved that TV show) ready to feast.

Aaron, Deede and Josh arrived and the meal prep got underway. Deede brought her cookbook and supplies and got to work.

We put newspaper down so the granite would be protected from oil splatters. We aren’t paper subscribers, so I had to use mailer ads – classy. The special potato latkes sizzled away in the oil and my kitchen counter tops were safe.

Deede brought sour cream and apple sauce for latke toppings. I’d never had latkes with apple sauce, and wow… was that good!

While we were inhaling latkes, the matzo balls were cooking away in the chicken soup. Deede made the chicken stock earlier in the day.

Shredded chicken, matzo balls, carrots, celery, parsnips and potatoes…

A fun night of good food and friends – just what we all needed.  Now we’re off to celebrate Christmas Eve with my family. I’ve been baking up a storm, whipping up appetizers, creating a Christmas movie for my family of old photos and just running around like crazy. Looking forward to hanging out with the fam tonight and eating Aim’s famous lasagna.

Happy Holidays to you and your families,

Christmas Home Decor Tour – 2011

I can’t believe how fast time has flown by this December. It seems like I just started decorating the house and then all of a sudden it’s the week before Christmas. How did that happen?

I got my Christmas cards out early, most of my shopping is done, all that is left is baking and a few parties – which will include me making frosted sugar cookies, neighbor gifts and some appetizers.

We were so lucky this year to get a fresh cut tree from Nevada City. Aim’s Dad hooked us up and my brother and Aim delivered it. Nothing beats the smell of a fresh tree – I’ve had smaller artificial trees over the years, but this year – I wanted  a real tree. I also opted for smaller real trees as table top decorations and my Mom and Dad kept my late Aunt’s tradition going by giving us kids a fresh wreath. Higgy is showing off his boot… my little handicapable trooper… (My friend Britt called him that and I love it!)

Dan got to work on the lights and I really wasn’t sure what direction I would go with decorations. Over the years I’ve collected quite the assortment of themed ornaments and tree decor that range in every size and color. I decided to go with more natural items – yarn balls, felt dogs, burlap bows, rustic bells, cloth candy canes and I threw in some glitz with sparkly snowflakes, ball ornaments, rhinestone tassels and monogrammed ornaments.

Put a bird on it… OMG, if you haven’t seen this video – you need to!

Wrapping and decorating are my favorite part of Christmas. I think it’s my mission to makes things look pretty and inviting… some day I will own my own business.

I just love the Santa and ornament themed wrap. I found the perfect snowflake gift tags and striped ribbon to match. The wrap was a HomeGoods special – $1.99 a roll – super thick with the cutting grid on the back… the tags were on sale at Target and I used 1/2 off coupons for the ribbon at Michaels. I blew through all of my wrap last year and had to restock everything – boxes, tissue, wrap, tags, etc. Dan and I still carry on the tradition that my Dad started when I was a kid. Special wrapping paper for my Mom… so Dan wraps my presents in a different paper than family and friend gifts and I do the same for him. It’s fun to see what we choose each year.

Belsnickle Santas are my thing this year. I love the vintage look and they fit in perfectly with my normal every day home decor. Here I have one next to my great aunt’s cookbooks and some Hammond’s old fashioned candy canes I found at Beverages and More. I decorated with Hammond’s candy canes last year too.

More Belsnickle Santas and our stockings jazzed up a bit.

I got out my handy glue gun and added red ribbon to our stockings… I used a lot more red in my decor this year and they needed the added pop of color.

I kept the vintage suitcase out from Halloween and added my new Santas to them. I got two of them at a local antique and home decorating store and I ordered the other ones online from Piper Classics. I also got a bunch of bell ornaments and the cloth candy canes from them this year.

You have to buy early, things sell out pretty fast.

Keeping with the more natural/rustic theme – I had Dan get my wood and iron reindeer down from attic storage. I haven’t used them in a few years, so a little wood polish and more red ribbon and they looked awesome on top of the entertainment center.

I flanked the opposite side with a matching reindeer and some gorgeous red and creme velvet boxes I picked up at HomeGoods. I used more red ribbon to attach the rusted metal star to the top box.

A detail shot of some of the hidden treasures. I brought the roller skate and ice skating ornaments back from last year and added some pine cones, bells and berries.

The wine bar got a simple treatment this year with garland and numbered glass mason jars full of wooden candy canes.

The items that started the look for this year’s decorations were new stockings I found at HomeGoods.

I have shiny glitz stockings, red and white polka dot, fur trimmed, blue, bronze, wine colored… I sort of have an obsession with stockings and no fireplace to hang them. The knitted old fashioned stripes looked fabulous against the black dresser.

My next house WILL have a fireplace.

I picked up some very cool Target – Smith and Hawken felted stars with creme stitching for the entry way niche.

Felted candy ornaments and wooden snowflakes completed the look.

I was excited to put some Christmas touches into my new wood shelves.

I filled them with old family black and white Christmas photos and other ornaments.

More burlap bows… I had 3 spools from Ballard Designs and a huge spindle of wire. Between the wreaths and the Christmas tree, I was a bow making machine. My Mom and I used to have our own holiday craft business and I learned how to tie a good bow because of that.

I picked up two red pots this year for $5.99 each and planted some live trees that I got from a local nursery. I will plant them in the backyard after Christmas. My dining room table scape is one of my favorite areas of the house this season.

My snow people made an appearance in my office this year. They sit on top of a little dresser I found at a garage sale and they share space next to a hat stand with my late grandmother’s favorite black velvet hat.

I framed some childhood Christmas photos of Dan and I and put them on the craft table in my office.

I also kept with the snowman theme in the guest bathroom.

All in all I adore everything about the look and feel I created this year. I think I used “less” decorations – but it feels like just enough. I was able to incorporate the old with the new and I’m happy with the outcome. There is nothing more comforting than being in a room lit by the glow of a Christmas tree.

Happy Holidays from my home to yours.

Need some inspiration?

Remember back when I wrote the TRIce Cream Sunday post about my friend Deede? I documented Deede’s first sprint triathlon – The ICE Breaker Triathlon at Granite Beach, Folsom Lake, CA – April 17th, 2011.  1/2 mile swim, 13 mile road bike, 4 mile trail run. I also talked about Deede setting a goal for herself back in July of 2010 to become more active. She immediately put things in motion. She joined a running group, a triathlon group and she plugged away at her “to do” list to get herself closer to her goal.  One of the “to do” list items included running a marathon. In an attempt to meet her goal, she signed up for more sprint triathlons, 5K’s, 10K’s and a few 1/2 marathons. She filled her weeknights and weekends with sweat and a true dedication to running and working out. She pushed herself to do her best.

December 4, 2011 – the California International Marathon – this was where Deede would complete her first marathon.

Deede’s husband mapped out a plan for us (her cheering squad) on marathon day. I got to work on a custom sign a few nights before and was totally stoked to scream my head off once we spotted her on the course.

While waiting for her, I caught a photo of a San Rafael fireman running the race in his gear. He wore his turnout pants and coat, a self-contained breathing apparatus (tank on his back) and his firefighter’s helmet. He was running to raise awareness and money for charity. We also saw a woman juggling, but missed getting that photo.

I did catch some super heroes.

Then we spotted Deede – black shorts, black socks, red shirt and hat…

She looked strong… and this was just before the Mile 22 water station… (Josh had seen her on other parts of the course, we joined late in the game.)

She was feeling great and was excited to see us.

She passed through the water station just before marker 22 and we headed back to the car to drive to the next meet up area.

We were able to track Deede on our iPhones using the “Find Friends” app. I was also tracking her splits on the CIM website and looking for her pace group.

We headed towards the California State Capitol (finish line) and parked.

The boys and I made our way to a corner of the course where we could cheer one last time before Deede made her way to the finish line.

We walked to a good spot and we waited…

Big fluffy dogs waited too…

We saw the fireman – he had picked up a fan club since mile 22… he was still going strong.

Deede rounded the corner and our cheering got louder and louder… Go Deede Go!

Josh held up the sign I made, so I could take photos. Deede is mildly obsessed with “Charlie the Unicorn”  – but fair warning, if you click on the YouTube link, you will not be able to get those 3 minutes and 47 seconds of your life back. 😉

She sprinted to the finish… we spotted her in line waiting for an official post race photo with her running buddies.

Not surprising at all that she turned her mylar race blanket into a cape… this is why I love Deede!

We finally made our way past the security gates to visit and talk to her. She finished the race in 5 hours and 2 minutes – total rock star!

Josh was super proud of her – we all were… She did it, she set a goal to get in shape and she is now a triathlete and marathon runner.

I am going to remember the smile plastered on her face forever… any time I’m looking for motivation or inspiration, I’m going to re-read this post.

After all the hugs and congrats, we started to make our way to the gear bag pick up area…

We stopped along the way to pet the giant Great Dane – Deede and Josh have their own Great Dane – Maxwell.

We found Deede’s bag – she was able to eat her banana and mix her recovery drink… then she worked on some stretching.

We met up with more friends… who also went with the “Charlie the Unicorn” theme when creating their sign… The “D” characters are from the video.

Kristina also ran the marathon – it was her first one too! 3 hours and 29 minutes – she totally dominated the race. So very proud of both girls. We continued celebrating with a post race pizza lunch.

We hit up Hot Italian for some eats.

We’ve been many times before and hoped the place wouldn’t be too crowded. Deede’s first pick was DeVere’s, but it was a zoo.

We lucked out – we were able to get a table for our party of 11.

Pizza in my belly…

Dan ordered the Materazzi and I ordered the same – minus the pepperoni. Olives, tomato sauce, mozzerella and fontina cheese.

Aaron ordered the Nibali brunch pizza and OMG, it was incredible! Scrambled eggs, mushrooms, spinach, mozzarella, crescenza cheese, prosciutto parma and bariani truffle oil. We traded slices.

Since we celebrated Deede’s first triathlon with a Guinness ice cream cone, I thought it was appropriate to celebrate her first marathon with a stracciatella gelato cone. Hmmm… Deede busts butt with her races and I get ice cream and gelato… I love it!

Like I said above… I could not be more proud of Deede and her accomplishments over the past year and five months. Right now is a hard time to stay on track with healthy eating and exercise. It seems like there are platters of baked goods and dining out temptations around every corner. Just writing this post has inspired me to stick with it. To stay on track through the holidays. There is no better time than now to keep up with an exercise plan. We are surrounded by holiday hustle and bustle and all of the stress that goes along with spending money, finding enough time in the day and juggling everything. Our bodies need a good workout.

So get off the couch and hit the streets, trails or a treadmill. No more excuses – set a goal and own it! Deede did and we can too!
