Combining my obsession with reality TV and cooking&#8230; genius!<\/p>\n<p>The Top Chef tour\u00a0truck rolled into Justin Herman Plaza in San Francisco, CA on June 11th as part of their 21 city tour. My girlfriend surprised me with tickets! She happened to have a friend with a connection to the tour manager, so we got VIP seating for the event. Best birthday surprise ever!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-363\" title=\"tour bus\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/topchefsemidsc02005.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"243\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s me standing on the back side of the semi &#8211; the seating was under tents in front.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-364\" title=\"venue\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/venuedsc01951.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is the other side of the truck. We sat at the front two seats to the right of the stage.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-365\" title=\"sign\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/topcheftoursign_dsc01958.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"289\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of the people in line took a picture of us hugging the Top Chef Tour sign.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-366\" title=\"tour manager\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/fredhostdsc01969.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We got called to sit down first &#8211; VIP treatment definitely had its advantages. The tour manager chatted with us for a bit and then introduced the two chefs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-367\" title=\"jamie\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/jamiedsc01973.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Jamie Lauren &#8211; Top Chef, Season 5 &#8211; New York City. She currently lives in\u00a0San Francisco and\u00a0is the Executive Chef at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.absinthe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Absinthe Brasserie &amp; Bar<\/a> with an upcoming \u00a0planned move to Los Angeles to start something new.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-368\" title=\"ryan\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/ryandsc01979.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ryan Scott &#8211; Top Chef, Season 4 &#8211; Chicago. He too currently lives and works in San Francisco. He has a catering business, teaches cooking classes and is about to launch a meal delivery service with lots of other exciting plans &#8211; he mentioned a S.F. store, but was pretty secretive about the details. You can check out his website &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/ryanscott2go.com\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Scott 2 Go<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Both chefs said the best place to follow them is on Twitter and Facebook.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-369\" title=\"ingredients\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/ingredientsdsc01967.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The recipes that they make on tour will eventually be posted to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bravotv.com\/top-chef\" target=\"_blank\">Bravo&#8217;s Top Chef website<\/a>, but they aren&#8217;t there yet. I tried to take notes on my iPhone, but didn&#8217;t get measurements, etc. and guessed at the names of things.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ingredients for Marinated Anchovy Bruschetta<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>White Marinated Spanish\u00a0Anchovies<br \/>\nBaguette &#8211; from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ferrybuildingmarketplace.com\/acme_bread_company.php\" target=\"_blank\">ACME Bread Co.<\/a> in the Ferry Building Marketplace in SF.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.maldonsalt.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Maldon Sea Salt<br \/>\n<\/a>Garlic<br \/>\nBeets &#8211; Fresh\/Boiled<br \/>\nMicro Basil<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Burrata\" target=\"_blank\">Burrata<\/a> &#8211; Fresh Italian Cheese<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Agrumato-Extra-Virgin-Pressed-Lemons\/dp\/B0007S70SK\" target=\"_blank\">Argumato Extra Virgin Olive Oil Pressed with Lemons<\/a> (This is one of the items Jamie brought with her to the Top Chef show)<br \/>\nApple Cider Vinegar<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s all I got&#8230;\u00a0Ryan toasted the baguette pieces while Jamie made a beet puree by adding olive oil and apple cider vinegar to the beets. \u00a0She used a Vita-Mix blender (another one of her favorite kitchen items) &#8211; here&#8217;s where I got side-tracked &#8211; they were joking around back and forth. There was banter about getting a red\/rubber spatula, a few calls to Stefan Richter (Top Chef &#8211; Season 5) and I didn&#8217;t really pay attention to the order of things, I was laughing too hard.<\/p>\n<p>I think it was baguette with olive oil brushed on before toasting, fresh garlic rubbed on\u00a0the toasted pieces\u00a0&#8211; beet puree, anchovy, burrata\u00a0cheese, sea salt (on the cheese only),\u00a0Argumato\u00a0Extra Virgin Olive Oil with pressed lemon drizzled on top of that and then the micro basil.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-370\" title=\"phone call to Stefan\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/stefancalldsc01995.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This photo was the phone call to Stefan. Ryan had a rough time getting his speaker phone to work. \u00a0Jamie claims that the crush between Stefan and her during the show was genuine. There were jokes back and forth about cute straight guys falling for hot lesbians &#8211; hah!<\/p>\n<p>Ryan then unbuttoned his chef coat to unveil his T-shirt &#8211; the crowd cheered and went wild.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-371\" title=\"Ryan's shirt\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/legalizegaydsc01993.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We then got to taste samples of the bruschetta &#8211; which BTW, is\u00a0on the menu\u00a0at Absinthe.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-372\" title=\"sample\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/sampledsc01990.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t care that I had the stomach issues, I was determined to taste what they made, anchovy and all.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-373\" title=\"foo\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/foo_sampledsc01991.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was delicious! I am going on\u00a0a local\u00a0hunt for the Argumato &#8211; the pressed lemon oil was out of this world!<\/p>\n<p>They also did a question and answer session where the audience could ask anything &#8211; it was hysterical. Both Ryan and Jamie were super sarcastic and kept the audience engaged and laughing the entire time. Someone asked what they had in their fridges at home &#8211; basically condiments and vodka &#8211; both eat at their jobs or are satisfied with the tasting they do throughout the day at their jobs. Ryan did give some shout-outs to a local taqueria and pizza place.<\/p>\n<p>They signed autographs and posed for photos after the show.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-374\" title=\"cookbook\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/cookbookdsc02030.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I purchased a Top Chef Quickfire Challenge Cookbook and they both signed it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-375\" title=\"sig\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/jamiesigdsc02032.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I got to tell Jamie about the blog and she said that she loves all the foodies in San Francisco and the surrounding areas.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-376\" title=\"autograph\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/jamiesigdsc02033.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"399\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Foo Diddy yo!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-377\" title=\"foo and jamie\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/fooandjamiedsc02000.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Jamie is TINY in person. They had to build a platform for her to see above the cooking counter during the event. I felt like a giant next to her.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-379\" title=\"cookbook sig\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/ryansigdsc02031.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ryan also signed\u00a0my Quickfire Challenge cookbook.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-378\" title=\"autograph\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/ryanphtodsc02034.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"394\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My girlfriend has the photo of Ryan and I on her camera &#8211; he was really sweet and chatted with everyone.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-387\" title=\"cutouts\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/cutoutsdsc02001.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"315\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We posed with cardboard cut-outs of Padma Lakshmi and Tom Colicchio &#8211; judges from the show &#8211; too bad they weren&#8217;t there too. We also played a spice guessing game &#8211; we guessed all 3 correctly&#8230; garlic powder, cloves and oregano &#8211; easy ones. We got pizza cutters for playing the game.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-380\" title=\"view\" src=\"http:\/\/foodiddy.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/06\/waterviewdsc02010.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was a gorgeous day, clear skies and in the 70&#8217;s. We crossed the street from the plaza and strolled through the Ferry Building Marketplace &#8211; foodie heaven for sure.
